Nice sunny day for some photos… Airfix’s 1/48 scale Hurricane Mk I Tropical… done as a machine from 73 Squadron, North Africa in 1942. Pretty much from the box, except resin wheels and exhausts, and PE seat belts. Markings are Montex masks and masking tape.
For this Hurricane I wanted that hot, bleached look. To get that look there are a combination of effects at play:
The model was given as ‘dusty’ coat as party of the weathering process.
This is not what I would call a ‘diorama’ – it is more a scene-setting with a couple of simple props. The base board is a sheet of 1/4in ply scrap about 4ft square. I covered the surface with some lumpy mortar mix (sand and cement) from a bag in the shed. As I smeared the mix around the ply I pushed lumpy bits toward to the back of the shot. The distance and sky are provided by 3 sheets of A4 with an free internet found image. The trick with the image is cropping the bottom of it enough to sort of ‘join’ with the base. The next trick is that it is taken outside in strong sunlight. And finally, on the PC, I increased the brightness a tad more, and dropped down the contrast – both effects adding to that ‘hot’ look. Here’s me captured during the set up….
